Cumberland Mayor And City Council Start Putting Together Operating Budget

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council, for two hours Tuesday night, discussed a wide range of fiscal issues in the first public step toward putting together a fiscal year 13 operating budget. With state funds declining, revenues falling and no desire to increase taxes- city officials are working toward balancing the budget without layoffs or furloughs of employees, or drastically reducing services. One potential savings, although it would have to be negotiated, could come through health insurance coverage provided for the AFSCME union. Those city employees contribute just 6% toward their health care. Councilwoman Mary Beth Pirolozzi has long maintained that that figure should be closer to 20%…
