Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss Says Washington St. Bridge Project Will Be Completed

May 23rd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

While the stated goal of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council has been to replace and re-open all three West Side bridges- the popular school of thought has been that the structures at Fayette and Cumberland can be addressed- but Washington Street may provide too many challenges. City officials have routinely pointed to Fayette and Cumberland as being first on the list for potential replacement- but questions and hurdles surround the Washington Street project.  That bridge, with a clearance of 18 feet, is a complicated rebuild. Because the span is only 45 feet across, increasing the clearance would create a "camel hump," which complicates the visibility for approaching motorists. Retaining walls would also need to be added to accommodate the hump. In addition, waivers would be needed from the federal government and CSX for both the sight approach problem and grade-level issues at Washington Street. Despite those challenges, Mayor Ray Morriss told WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show”, the Washington Street bridge project will be completed…

This is bulls–t. It can be raised plenty high enough without all this made up B.S. drama.

      >CSX has held the city of Cumberland hostage for years. Consider this – the market cap of CSX stock is upwards of $61 billion dollars. That’s billion with a B. The company, in general, is booming. On top of that, didn’t CSX screw Cumberland out of quite a few good paying jobs over the last year or two? The city should not pay for the bridge repairs. CSX could foot the entire bill and it would barely register on their balance sheet.
