Cumberland World War II Vet To Be Awarded Silver Star

World War II Veteran Irvin W. “Butch” Johnson of Cumberland will receive his Silver Star Medal this Sunday at a ceremony at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Major General Bill Rapp, Commandant of the United States Army War College will award Johnson his Silver Star 70 years after he earned it.  Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) will attend the ceremony.

WHEN: Sunday October 4, 11:00 AM

As a member of the 87th Infantry Division, Johnson fought against the German Army in Europe, becoming a Staff Sergeant and Squad Leader.  Johnson was awarded the Silver Star in February of 1945, but never received official recognition. The Silver Star Medal is America’s third highest military decoration and is awarded for gallantry in action against the enemy.
