Cummings Suspends Bid For Governor

January 5th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings has suspended her run for governor of Maryland due to personal considerations, she released in a statement Friday. “Making a positive and direct contribution to the state of Maryland and to our nation was my greatest motivating factor for stepping into the public arena," Cummings said. "I thank all of the people across the country who have supported my campaign and those whom I have met on the campaign trail who also fervently believe that we can and must do better for the people of Maryland."

The Democrat and wife of Rep. Elijah Cummings announced her run in October, citing economic inequality as a concern of hers.

This was Cummings' first run for public office. The 46-year-old earned a doctorate in political science from Purdue University and has worked as New York congressman Charles B. Rangel's chief of staff and started Global Policy Solutions, a social change strategy firm in 2005.

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan is seeking a second term in 2018's election. The primary is June 26.
