The Downtown Development Commission last month started discussions with Cumberland Police officials concerning an expanded use of video surveillance to help provide an increase in security.

There are already cameras downtown but out of a total of 38 only 2 are now working. If this is such an important policing tool why have the existing cameras been allowed to fail?
It seems that there is a total lack of commitment in using this tool as it was intended.
Any cameras installed will not have dedicated operators to monitor the downtown area. They will be used after the fact, after crimes have occurred, as a means of finding and arresting the perpetrators of crimes. No crime will be eliminated. A balaclava or a clown mask is all that would be required to remain anonymous. It’s a way of doing nothing and pretending to be tough on crime.
