Local law enforcement believes one of the most effective manners in halting criminal activity is by aggressively dealing with repeat offenders- something that has become a major problem in Cumberland. The Cumberland Police Department earlier this year hired two new employees using a grant to enable the city to participate in the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention’s Safe Streets initiative- including former longtime Allegany County Sheriff David Goad. Goad, who opted two years ago not to seek another term as sheriff, was hired as the city’s Safe Streets Program coordinator.
