Design And Funding Aspects Of Downtown Project To Be Focus In 2019

With the design still in process and the funding package not finalized- actually construction on the re-designed Downtown Cumberland Mall is still more than a year out.  City officials have been working on various design concepts that will coincide with plans to replace aging underground utility lines. The proposed renovations include reinstalling Baltimore Street- opening it to vehicular traffic and limited parking one way from Mechanic Street to George Street. The project is estimated to cost between $5 million and $7.4 million, with state and Appalachian Regional Commission grants supplying the majority of the funding.  Paul Kelly, executive director of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, reports that 2019 will basically be used to bring the design and funding aspects of the project to fruition- with construction targeted to begin early the following year…
