Details Released Concerning Teen Arrested For Attempted Murder

July 23rd, 2018 by WCBC Radio

On Sunday, 17 year old Akhary Tiere Williams was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder, 1st Degree Assault, Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Felony, and related charges, after turning himself in to authorities.

The charges stem from an incident which occurred near the intersection of Altamont Terrace and Baltimore Street in Cumberland during the evening of 06/03/2018. At approximately 10:30 PM, the Cumberland Police responded to a reported shooting at that location. When they arrived, they learned that the victim had fled to a location on Decatur Street. They responded to that location and located the 18 year old victim, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm.

At that time the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) also responded to assist in the investigation.

Investigators learned that the victim and another subject were in the area when they were approached by two subjects known to them. When the two suspects got close enough to them, one suspect pulled a handgun out, and fired three shots at the victim, striking him once in the arm. They were able to identify the two suspects as Akhary Williams and Matthew Desales Washington. They identified Williams as the person who fired the handgun.

Washington, 18 years of age, from Cumberland, was taken into custody a short time later when the Cumberland Police CERT Team executed a search warrant obtained by C3I Investigators at a private residence on Pine Avenue in Cumberland. Washington was charged with 1st Degree Assault and Reckless Endangerment at that time. He is currently being held, without bond, at the Allegany County Detention Center, pending trial.

Williams was not located at that time. Investigators learned that Williams was originally from Baltimore and had fled back there to avoid apprehension. With the assistance of the Maryland State Police Warrant and Apprehension Unit, several locations were searched for Williams. Williams then turned himself in, while accompanied by family.

Williams, who is being charged as an adult, was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance, and is currently being held, without bond, at the Allegany County Detention Center, pending his next court appearance.

Investigators believe that the shooting was retaliation for an earlier incident that occurred several days before in which Williams was the victim. In that case, 17 year old Jason Leonard Crawford, Jr. was arrested, and charged as an adult with Armed Robbery, Theft, Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Felony, and related charges. He, also, remains incarcerated at the Allegany County Detention Center, pending trial.

The investigations are continuing by C3I.
