DNR Offers Boat Safety Tips

July 4th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

As Natural Resources Police continued the search for a missing boater off the coast of Kent Island Tuesday, agency officials gathered in Annapolis to urge the public to boat safely. Eight boaters have died in Maryland this year compared to 12 in 2014 — including two last weekend on Kent Island and one in Frederick County. With Fourth of July weekend upon us,  police offer tips to help keep boaters safe:

•Take a boating safety class.

•Inspect your boat to make sure everything is in working order.

•Know the limitations of your watercraft.

•File a float plan to make sure others know where you're going.

•Keep abreast of the weather.

•Avoid alcohol.

•Have life jackets for everyone on board and keep them easily accessible.
