Downtown Christmas Tree Lighting to be Virtual This Year

Another popular tradition has fallen victim to the Coronavirus pandemic, with the official announcement Thursday that the downtown Cumberland Christmas tree lighting will be a virtual event this year. It is the latest in a series of downtown holiday events being handled differently this season. Last month, no Halloween Parade could be held,  and the usual trick-or-treat activities were essentially reduced to a drive by night at Constitution Park.  During the regular meeting of the Downtown Development Commission, Executive Director Melinda Kelleher  said that given the latest COVID restrictions, a virtual ceremony was deemed the only safe way to proceed with the event…
