Downtown Mall Meeting Provides Input and Suggestions

It was a packed house at Windsor Hall Wednesday night as business representatives, city officials and citizens participated in a panal discussion and forum focusing on ways to improve the downtown business district. Some of themost often mentioned concerns centered on panhandling, loitering, drug use, foul language and inappropriate attire. Some of the suggestions included creating a  “Code of Conduct” for the downtown area, including a dress code. Others suggested the city enforce a curfew.  Captain Greg Leake, of the Cumberland Police Department said there will be an effort to have more officers visable on the mall in the future.  Downtown Cumberland Manager Ed Mullaney, who facilitated the event, said the meeting wasn’t just for show. He said officials intend to continue a dialogue and work with the community to make improvements downtown…
