“Driving While Black” Stop & Police Response Featured On WCBC

July 16th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland resident James Wormack, a 61 year old African American, was recently pulled over for a minor traffic violation, but has sent a letter to Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson and Cumberland Police Chief Charles Hinnant saying he believes the stop was made because he is black.

Wormack talked about the stop with WCBC’s Dave Norman, saying he was initially stopped for having his daughter’s graduation tassel dangling from his mirror, which was interpreted as causing an obstruction…

Hinnant said the initial stop was made by the Sheriff’s Department, but outlined what normal procedure would be for his department.

Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson is on vacation and tells WCBC that he will not comment until he reviews the incident.

Both departments are conducting an inquiry into what happened during the stop.

Well, as I drive around Cumberland area. I see many minor traffic violations. Not stopping at Stop signs. Not yielding at yield signs. My pet peev, Crossing over the center line! Or, drivers driving up the middle of the street, with parking on their side. So, when this article starts out by minor traffic violation. That’s the reason, you did something wrong! Not the color of your skin. I wasn’t there, so, by what was worded, just glad the an officer was there! doing his job. Not like me, seeing it daily, and never an officer to wright a ticket.
