Drudge Report Breathes Life into Western Maryland Secession

February 13th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

The nationally known Drudge Report has given additional life to a movement that wants to see Maryland’s five western counties secede.

WJZ-TV, the CBS affiliate in Baltimore, did a story on the proposal this week, which would see Allegany, Garrett, Frederick, Washington and Carroll Counties leave Maryland and establish their own state.  The basis for the proposal is that the five counties have little in common with the metro areas that control the state, and that little attention is paid to this area because of a lack of legislative seats.

County commissioners from the affected counties have distanced themselves from the proposal, and political scientists say the plan has no chance of going anywhere.  However, there is a Facebook page that has garnered eight thousand “Likes,” so supporters are probably going to press on.

For his part, Governor Martin O’Malley has said he couldn’t imagine the state without Western Maryland.
