Drug arrest in Garrett County

September 8th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

A West Virginia woman and Maryland man remained jailed in Garrett County on Thursday, a day after allegedly leading police on a 13-mile chase on Interstate 68.

Rarkia Lanai Smith, 30, of Charleston, and Kevin Lorenzo Jackson, 38, of Suitland, are charged with eight drug-related counts each. The drugs they were allegedly transporting had an estimated street value of $16,000, Maryland State Police said.

They were each being held on $20,000 bond, according to electronic court records.

Maryland State Police said a trooper stopped a 2005 Chrysler Sebring operated by Smith Wednesday morning near Keyser's Ridge for an alleged windshield view obstruction. The trooper reportedly detected an odor of suspected marijuana, and was preparing to conduct a search of the vehicle when Smith allegedly drove away.

The subsequent pursuit ended at the 1-mile marker near the West Virginia state line.

Police said a bag containing suspected drugs that was reportedly thrown out of the window of the vehicle as Smith and Jackson fled was recovered.

The bag reportedly contained 21.2 grams of marijuana, 99.9 grams of cocaine, 29.3 grams of heroin, 100 Oxycodone tablets and a trace amount of an unknown controlled dangerous substance.
