Economist Points to Attracting Young Business Professionals as Area’s Key

Nationally-renowned economist Anirban Basu was the featured speaker Thursday for the Greater Cumberland Committee’s membership meeting held at the Rocky Gap Casino Resort.   Basu is Chairman & CEO of Sage Policy Group, Inc., an economic and policy consulting firm headquartered in Baltimore.  The Sage Group was instrumental  in developing the initial  plans for a re-opened Downtown Cumberland Mall.  He has addressed the group on several occaisions with detailed presentations  regarding, global, national, and regional economic performance using the most current data available.  Looking at this region, Basu said it is imperative to take advantage of a tremendous opportunity to attract young business professionals…

    Good grief. Basu is not a “Nationally-renowned economist.” He’s a economic consultant from the Baltimore area. Who puts out this nonsense? The Greater Cumberland Committee?

    So, here is the guy that sowed the lame idea of reopening Baltimore Street, for ten times the cost of closing it, in the cognitively-barren minds of local government telling us we just need more yuppies who would, very likely, prefer the mall kept closed to traffic. I guess the lack of professional jobs or public transportation was happily ignored in his wee TED talk.

      The mall has to be re-opened to traffic in order to get the state funds for the underground infrastructure replacement. That’s the only reason this project is happening. And I don’t think it’s a sure bet that it will actually happen. They are still millions short for the project and I wouldn’t put money on the projected October start. Not to mention the millions required to gut the M & T building and turn it into a boutique hotel. Yeah, right.
