Edgewood Man Held Without Bond After Alleged Police Assaults

On Saturday morning, at 7:09 am, officers responded to a business in the 700 block of Park Street for a theft complaint.

When officers arrived on the scene they located the suspect walking in the vicinity of the theft with the stolen property. Officers confront the male subject identified as Sidney Charles, age 34 of Edgewood, MD, and attempted to get him to return to the store. Charles refused to comply during the incident despite numerous attempts by officers to encourage him to cooperate. Officer then attempted to place Charles under arrest at which time he became combative and resisted arrest.

During the physical fight with officers a Taser was utilized to safely gain control of Charles and take him into custody. One officer sustained injuries as the result of altercation with Charles. Both the officer and Charles were transported by the Cumberland Fire Department Ambulance to the Western Regional Medical Center. Both Charles and the officer were treated and later released. However, while at the Regional Medical Center Charles again became combative and assaulted a third officer.

Charles was charged with three counts of 2nd Degree Assault, one count of 2nd Degree Assault of a Law Enforcement officer, on count of Theft under $100, Failing to Obey, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest.

Charles was later taken to District Court for his Initial Appearance and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.
