Elijah Cummings Scholarship Endowed at Allegany College of Maryland

April 23rd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Allegany College of Maryland Foundation Board President Dr. Audie Klingler is pleased to announce the creation of an endowed memorial scholarship to support students pursing higher education and provide assistance to the College’s Aspiring Young MENtors group.

The Elijah E. Cummings Scholarship, created through a gift of $150,000 to the Foundation, was established by Cumberland native Bob Powell in honor of the former congressman’s leadership and legacy.

The Cummings Scholarship is open to full- or part-time students who are U.S. citizens with first preference to Allegany County residents who demonstrate financial need and meet minimal academic requirements. Scholarship recipients are selected by donor-appointed committee members consisting of Richard “Rock” Cioni, Tifani Fisher, Eugene Frazier and Laurie Marchini.

ACM’s Aspiring Young MENtors, founded in 2018, is a group of African American male mentors and emerging mentors who help guide, encourage and support other African American male students on campus. AYM mentors emphasize connection and a sense of belonging for student-mentees who may be having a hard time adjusting socially to college or struggling to adapt to the demands of college courses. Students receive training on accessing campus resources, time-management, goal setting and other topics they identify as important to their success.

Powell, now a resident of Chapel Hill, grew up in Cumberland’s West Side neighborhood and graduated from Allegany High School in 1965 – one year after the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. “I’ve long admired Maryland U.S. Congressman Cummings’s public service and passionate belief in the power of education to transform lives. It was a passion instilled in him by his parents who, despite having little education themselves, developed learning opportunities for their children and supported their education,” said Powell.

The deadline for the Elijah E. Cummings Scholarship application has been extended to May 31, 2020. Questions may be directed to sforeman@allegany.edu

I notice Powell got out of here and, despite all his admiration for Cummings, moved not to Cummings’ area but nice, tony Chapel Hill. Best to admire some things from a safe distance.
