Engineers Give City Overview Of Baltimore Street Bridge Replacement Project

January 22nd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland officials on Tuesday conducted a public work session which allowed engineers to provide an overview of the project involving replacement of the Baltimore Street Bridge. Bobby Smith, city engineer, along with representatives from Wilson T. Ballard, provided details at the meeting with the mayor and City Council present.  Although the session was advertised in advance and the public encouraged to attend- only two people were in the audience for the presentation. The plans include replacing the 99-foot-long and 60-foot-wide steel-plate girder bridge with a new superstructure. Actual construction on the estimated $3 million project won’t begin until March of next year. Smith said that the plan is to maintain two way, single lane traffic during the course of construction…

Only 2 people in attendance. I guess Ed Mullaney was one of them. Seems that there’s not much interest in “polishing the gem” that welcomes visitors into our historic downtown.

Given Cumberland’s great history of bridges, there is a lot to be said for a solid, boring bridge. “Oh, look, a nice bridge! Too bad it leads to nowhere.”

I would think that most visitors to our fair city would exit I68 on the downtown ramp anyway. They wouldn’t have to come near the $3 mil bridge in order to visit the $9.2+ mil renovated historic downtown.

if we have 9 million to waste on downtown,we might as well spend 9 million on the bridge,it s only money that we don’t have !!!!
