Enhanced School Security Plan May Not Be Ready For Beginning Of School Year

Time is running out for the Allegany County Board of Education to implement an enhanced security plan for its schools prior to the start of the next school year.  The current push in Allegany County and many school districts across the country is to add security personnel at the schools in the form of school resource officers. Sheriff Craig Robertson, who is heading up the committee appointed to develop a new comprehensive plan, said he is looking at obtaining a federal Community Oriented Policing Services Grant to add more school resource officers. The county commissioners have earmarked $190,000 so far during their 2014 budget process to go to law enforcement to help with the costs of adding additional security details. With the county commissioners finalizing the FY 2014 budget this week and the committee not yet having final recommendations complete, it appears unlikely new plan can be put into place prior to the August start of the school year.  Mike Llewellyn, member of the Allegany County Board of Education, said he would be satisfied to at least get approval for a modified, interim plan to have in place for the fall…
