Escalating Costs Of New School Construction Has State Education Officials At A Loss

The skyrocketing costs of building new schools in Maryland have education officials statewide at a loss, and struggling to put together funding packages to cover the cost. That is being felt locally with the new Allegany High School project. At a meeting of the Interagency Committee on School Construction in mid-September, just two weeks after the Allegany County School Board received the Allegany bids- IAC executive director David Lever emphasized the role the post-recession recovery has played in escalating public school construction costs. The state, the largest funding source in the projects, is currently reviewing the state’s contribution per square foot for all school construction projects in light of the escalating costs. School Board member Sara Beth Bittinger wants to discuss the impact state mandates have had on the cost of new school construction when the board meets with the legislative delegation next month…
