Fatal accident on I-70

One man is dead after a tractor trailer accident on I-70 W in Fulton County Friday morning. According to Fulton County Dispatch, the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the 165 Mile Marker of I-70 W, as a tractor trailer overturned. Penn-DOT is still on scene late into the morning, as the vehicle was carrying cooking oil, which was spilled all along the highway. The driver of the tractor trailer was pronounced dead at the scene. WHAG reports all lanes on I-70 W were closed for several hours, until the left lane was re-opened for traffic around 8:45 a.m.

The Maryland State Police are investigating a vehicle collision that resulted in two fatalities.

On 04/09/15 at approximately 0016 hours, Troopers along with Washington County Deputies, local Fire and EMS companies, responded to I-70 eastbound in the area of the 18 mile marker for a reported serious motor vehicle collision.

The initial investigation revealed that 44 year old Christopher Crites of Little Orleans, MD was driving his 2001 Buick Century westbound in the eastbound fast lane of I-70.  While traveling in the wrong direction, Crites struck a 2005 Buick Lacrosse head-on.  The driver of the 2005 Buick Lacrosse was Marcy Kauffman of Williamsport, MD. 

The drivers of both vehicles, Christopher Crites and Marcy Kauffman were both pronounced deceased on the scene.  There were no other occupants in either vehicle and no other injuries.

It is unknown at this time what caused Crites to travel in the wrong direction of I-70.  The investigation is ongoing. 

The initial investigation is being conducted by TFC J.  Schmidt of the Hagerstown Barrack.  Maryland State Police reconstructionist, Cpl D. Zanoni is also assisting with the investigation.
