UPDATED: Cumberland Man Dies In Interstate Crash

Saturday at approximately 12:00 AM Deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to Interstate 68 at Exit 33, in Frostburg, for a motor vehicle crash.

Investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, being operated by 35 year old Michael Stallings of Cumberland,  was traveling west on I68 when the operator apparently lost control of the vehicle while exiting from the interstate. The vehicle crossed the off-ramp and struck an electrical culvert  on an embankment which caused the vehicle to flip onto it's top. 
 
Stallings was pronounced deceased at the scene. 
 
The ramp was closed for a time while the crash was investigated by the Allegany County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Team.
 
Speed was determined to be a factor in the crash and the investigating is continuing. 
 
Frostburg Fire Department, Shaft Fire Department, Allegany County Department of Emergency Services, LaVale Ambulance, Mt. Savage Ambulance, Eastern Garrett Fire Department, The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Maryland State Highway Administration responded on the incident. . 
 
 

INITIAL REPORT

Allegany County Emergency Management reports one person was killed in an accident between midnight and 1 a.m. The incident was initially reported at 12:26 a.m. as a "Vehicle accident, I68 westbound exit 33 off ramp, vehicle on its top, trauma arrest per command."   An update alert that followed reported one fatality, with "off ramp shutdown indefinitely for reconstruction."
