Flintstone Elementary School physical education teacher, Kari Brown, was honored at a surprise assembly on Friday, April 13, 2018, for being one of only two educators across the country selected for Project Fit America’s National All Star Teacher of the Year award. Kari was nominated as the result of in-service reports from PFA trainers, who worked on-site at Flintstone to determine if she qualified for this award.
Nominations are based upon several qualities including exceptional dedication to students; quality of social development of students to include all the building blocks of fitness; outstanding creativity in PFA program usage; and quality and progressive use of a wide variety of PFA’s broad-based programming.
According to the PFA Executive Director, “The purpose and goal of this award is to identify and honor physical education teachers whose spirit, determination, drive, and creativity has resulted in outstanding program development and sustainability.”
Flintstone Elementary was selected as the first public school in Maryland to be part of Project Fit America in 2012 when Western Maryland Health System and Maryland Physicians Care joined forces with PFA to create a model and pilot of innovative fitness in education at the school. This health and wellness program is designed to raise fitness test scores of children and teach lifetime fitness.
