Football Bill Tackled By Maryland House Committee

March 6th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports a Maryland House of Delegates Committee has rejected a bill that would have eliminated tackle football, citing it as a "public health" bill.  The measure would have eliminated tackle football and heading in soccer in elementary and middle school. Of the 22 members, 19 voted to kill the measure.

Previously, Sen. William C. Smith Jr., D-Montgomery County, who filed the bill, told the Baltimore Sun it's not meant to undermine football. He says it's meant to show the state doesn't want to enable an activity that's developmentally detrimental.

Former University of Maryland and NFL player Madieu Williams was also working on the bill.

Some youth football leagues have seen lower participation numbers.
