A longtime Allegany County educator has passed away. Jim Eckard, 82, died Wednesday. Eckard graduated from Fort Hill in 1949 where he starred in baseball and basketball. He then went on to play minor league baseball in the Detroit Tigers’ organization. Eckard taught physical education at Fort Hill until his retirement in 1986. He coached both baseball and basketball during his career. The Scarpelli Funeral Home in Cumberland is in charge of arrangements.
