Fracking Remains A Controversial Issue

Fracking, the method used to extract natural gas from marcellus shale deposits has come down to the economy versus the environment. Opponents are leery of the process, fearing it could contaminate the water and create other environmental issues; advocates point to the hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue stream that could result for western Maryland. Comptroller Peter Franchot, while admitting that he is no expert on the subject, says that he has read enough studies that prove the process can be conducted safely with no harm to the environment. Those fighting against, he says, are doing so for political reasons…
