Franchot Announces Plans for Democratic Nomination in 2022

January 24th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot has announced plans to seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 2022.  Franchot told WCBC Radio News at the PACE reception that he has a strong track record as comptroller.

Maryland is one of 12 states with a closed primary where only registered party members may vote in primaries.  This excludes independents until the general election in November.  Comptroller Peter Franchot is seen as a moderate Democrat and he told WCBC at the PACE reception that there are many benefits to opening up primaries to independent voters.

There are no benefits to opening party primaries to independent voters. They are welcome to join if they wish, but the nominee is the nominee of the party, not the party and a plus one.
