Franchot Says It’s More Patriotic For Marylanders To Shop At Local Small Businesses

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot says it is "more patriotic" for Marylanders to shop at small locally owned businesses, rather than shop at large "big box" stores, or shop online. Franchot says small businesses collect state sales taxes, and invest their profits back into the community. Under state law, online merchants are not required to collect the state's sales tax, unless they have a physical building in Maryland.  Efforts to extend that sales tax to online sales have failed to clear any legislative committees in Annapolis. Franchot says while some states have already addressed the issue, he believes it has to be addressed on a federal level…
