Franchot Says Oversight Transfer Bill Was Payback

Lawmakers last week overrode Governor Larry Hogan’s veto of a bill transferring Maryland's alcohol, tobacco and gasoline oversight from the comptroller's office to a new independent commission. WBAL reports the House of Delegates voted 98-39, while the Senate voted 30-16. In a letter to House Speaker Michael E. Busch, Hogan said the bill "is not necessary, serves no purposes, will waste taxpayers' money and disrupts a well-ordered and completely functional regulatory system."   Comptroller Peter Franchot, who in February questioned the motives of the bill's House sponsor, told WCBC News that the legislation was payback from fellow Democrats "because of my advocacy for craft beer and my independence from the political bosses down there in Annapolis."  He says that this battle is not over…

    Pete has run the Comptroller’s office on a “my way or the highway” approach since taking office. He is abrasive in working with others quite often, and never misses a photo opp. It is no surprise that when you poke the bear sooner or later it swats back.
