The House and Garden Club of Frostburg announced recently that over $3500 has been raised since it opened a Thrift Shop in August.
Best known for their 63 lamppost baskets, with summer flowers and winter holiday greenery and lights, the Garden Club opened the Thrift Shop as a test with the hopes of raising dollars for additional beautification projects.
Setting up in donated storefront space on Frostburg’s historic Main Street, the club took in over 1200 donated housewares items. Visitors were quick to find and explore the Thrift Shop, and give financial donations to the Garden Club in exchange for the items displayed in the shop. Volunteers staffed the shop 16 hours a week, working to give the shop a pleasant atmosphere and cheerful staff to greet the shoppers.
“The four-month adventure has proven to be a wonderful success and the club has voted to make the Thrift Shop an ongoing project,” stated club president Kit Pepper. “We have outgrown this space and are looking for another suitable Main Street location that will allow us to expand to include larger furniture items with our housewares inventory. We are also asking the community to make suggestions for future Frostburg beautification projects. We are committed to our lamppost baskets but the Thrift Shop is giving us the resources to do single or ongoing beautification projects in meaningful ways.“
The Thrift Shop will be closing on Dec. 15 with the hope of reopening in new space in February. On Thursday, Dec. 12, 1 pm to 8 pm, the shop will offer 25% discount for FSU faculty, employees and students. On Saturday, Dec. 14, it will be Kid’s Day, with discounts and free gift wrapping, from 1 pm to 4 pm.
