FrostburgFirst Announces Winning Artists for Upcoming Public Art Project

July 28th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

FrostburgFirst is pleased to announce an artist has been selected for an upcoming public art project in downtown Frostburg. In June 2021, FrostburgFirst put out a call for proposals for a public art project next to the Mechanic Street parking lot in downtown Frostburg and received some incredibly creative responses. The review panel selected the proposal submitted by Cumberland resident and local artist Frank Asher to move forward with implementation. The project requirements included the use of sustainable or recycled materials, an interactive element, and a theme celebrating the beauty, history and culture of Frostburg.

Frank Asher was delighted that his proposal was selected for implementation. “It’s wonderful because I’m exploring new ways of being creative and this is affirmation.” Mr. Asher is the owner of Frank’s Terra Dreams, with the mission to bring a sense of life, inspiration and renewal to the homes, gardens, and community public spaces of Allegheny County.

To honor the history and culture of Frostburg, the installation will feature refinished railroad ties and a starburst of coal suspended by rebar and copper tubes. The piece will be surrounded by native plants and a blooming vine. FrostburgFirst is moving forward with applying for implementation funding and hopes to install the completed project in the grassy area located by the City's public parking lot on Mechanic Street between Broadway and Water Street in the Spring of 2022.

FrostburgFirst also congratulates runner-up Chablis Miller, Frostburg resident and muralist. “I love to work with local businesses and private homeowner on murals.” The panel also selected two honorable mentions, Gina Lynn of 7 Letters, and Dustin Davis and Zoey Yi.
