$150,000 in funding has been approved by the Allegany County Commissioners that will go toward the development of a Coal Miners Memorial in Frostburg. During the recent public meeting, county officials voted unanimously to approve the funding which includes $75,000 in a state bond issue plus $75,000 in matching funds raised by the Foundation for Frostburg. The project requires county approval as the planned memorial will be located on county property adjacent to the Frostburg Depot.  Features will include a wall containing the names of approximately 650 miners who died between 1838 and 2007 and the memorial will also feature a bronze, life-sized statue of a miner wearing a helmet and holding a book in one hand and an apple in the other. County Commissioners Creade Brodie Jr, called this an important monument to pay homage to those miners who lost their lives; while at the same time recognizing the important role coal has played in the region’s history…

I like the idea of the memorial but I really do not see this as a good use of public funds. It is a vanity project that should be fundable by voluntary contributions or not funded at all.

In a day and age where all our history is being torn down or removed. It is a fitting memorial of hard working Americans who made ourlife what it is today. Remembering our past is better than removing it because it causes us to change and make our lives better.
