Garrett County's share of a renovation project at Southern Middle School would top $29 million, the county's commissioners learned during a meeting this week with Board of Education members. The Cumberland Times News reports the total cost of the proposed project is more than $39 million, said Paul Edwards, chairman of the commission.

The proposed design for the renovation includes a redesigned gym with new bleacher seating, additional parking for the gym, a performing arts center and new tennis courts, according to a presentation made to the school board in 2014.

The school board learned in September about a projected $6.4 million increase in construction costs for the project.

The increase is based on fiscal year 2017 Capital Improvement Program guidelines established by the Interagency Committee on Public School Construction.
