Good News On Broadband Front For Allegany County

November 8th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

A double dose of good news on the broadband front for Allegany County announced during the weekly business meeting.  The commissioners awarded a contract for $599,869.22 to Conxx System to provide a microwave upgrade to the AllCoNet system.  Beth Thomas, the county’s coordinator of information technology, said the project will improve the reliability and speed of the network…

AllCoNet is a county Internet and broadband system. Funding for the upgrade will come from the Appalachian Regional Commission ($300,000), the county ($100,000), and Allegany County Public Schools ($100,000) and the city of Cumberland ($100,000), with a few dollars left over. In another broadband-related item, commissioners entered an agreement to work with the Maryland Broadband Cooperative to extend fiber optic cable in the county; the county will recoup some of the costs of the project through a revenue sharing agreement. Completion of the project is expected sometime in January.
