Grand Jury Indicts Alleged Capital Gazette Shooter On 23 Counts

July 20th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports a grand jury on Friday returned a 23-count indictment against alleged Capital Gazette shooter Jarrod Ramos, Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Wes Adams said. The indictment charges him with five counts of first-degree murder in the June 28 killing of Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, John McNamara and Rebecca Smith.

Ramos allegedly barricaded the back door to the newsroom before entering with a shotgun. Authorities say Ramos nursed a years-long grudge against the paper, a former reporter and a former publisher, unsuccessfully suing for defamation after the paper reported on his guilty plea in a criminal harassment case. The former reporter received an envelope at The Virginian-Pilot, where he now works, that was postmarked the day of the shooting.

He is charged with the attempted first-degree murder of photojournalist Paul W. Gillespie and the first-degree assault of Gillespie, reporter Selene San Felice, reporter Phil Davis, sales consultant Janel Cooley, intern Anthony Messenger and reporter Rachael Pacella.

Adams will prosecute the case himself, joined by assistant state's attorneys Jason Knight and Aaron L. Meyers.

Ramos remains held without bail.
