Grim Comments on West Side CSX Bridge Renovations

The Washington Street Bridge in Cumberland has been closed since the first week in April- but it appears that some progress is being made toward a re-opening. The bridge was closed indefinitely based on results from an engineering inspection on April 7th according to city officials.  Deterioration at the bridge forced it to be reduced to one lane in August 2012. The lane closure was done to reduce the weight load. The Washington Street bridge is one of three aging bridges on the city's West Side, all owned by CSX Transportation. Others are on Fayette and Cumberland streets. The poor condition of all three bridges has received much attention in the last 18 to 24 months, including studies and public meetings addressing their futures.
