Health Department Expands Massie Addictions Treatment Unit

August 24th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Health Department today announced that the
Joseph S. Massie Unit, which provides inpatient substance abuse treatment services for adults, has
expanded its capacity. While the Massie Unit previously housed and treated up to 25 adults at a
time, the unit is now licensed through the State of Maryland to treat up to 45 adults.

“Opioid addiction is affecting individuals and families throughout our community, and it is so
important that we make addiction treatment services as accessible as possible. We are pleased that
we are able to expand the capacity of the Massie Unit at such a critical time,” said Jenelle Mayer,
Allegany County Health Officer.

The Massie Unit has a long history of providing high-quality residential addiction treatment services.
The unit offers individual, group, and family counseling as well as nursing and physician services,
medication services, alcohol and drug education, coping skills education, aftercare planning,
recreational and leisure activities, and much more.

“The Massie Unit has 38 years of experience providing addictions treatment with a highly qualified
multidisciplinary team. The staff are devoted to helping the patients and families they serve,” said
Kathy Miller, Massie Unit Director.

The Massie Unit treats adults ages 18 and older from anywhere in Maryland. It is located on the
grounds of the Thomas B. Finan Center in Cumberland.

Individuals may be referred to the Massie Unit by a counselor, a physician, a hospital, a community
agency, an employee assistance program, the legal system, or other sources.

The Massie Unit accepts Medical Assistance, Medicare, and private health insurance. Health
insurance generally covers the cost of treatment. If health insurance does not cover the cost of
treatment, fees are charged based on the patient’s ability to pay.

For more information, or to make a referral, contact the Massie Unit at 301-777-2285.
