Hiring Of Lobbyists Raises Eyebrows

When the Maryland Rural Counties Coalition agreed to hire two lobbyists last year- it was the selection of Bruce Bereano that raised some eyebrows- however in Garrett County it was the hire of William Miles that was a deal breaker. Bereano, considered by some to be one of the most powerful lobbyists in Annapolis, does not come without some baggage. He served less than a year in a halfway house and under house arrest in the 1990s following a federal conviction for mail fraud. According to sources, Garrett County’s main objection to joining was the possibility of Miles’ hire. Indications are that the Garrett County Commissioners were irritated when Miles, who represents the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation, failed to invite the elected officials to a meeting on the issue. Garrett County Administrator Monty Pagenhart didn’t offer specifics for the county’s reluctance to join the Coalition, but did reference a concern with the potential lobbyist to be hired…
