Governor Larry Hogan today announced the appointment of new members to the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) Board of Directors. These appointments deliver on the governor’s promise to overhaul the board, and build on his enactment of major reforms of the way UMMS operates.
The following UMMS appointees, listed in alphabetical order, have been appointed.
James “Chip” DiPaula is the interim UMMS Board Chair. He is the co-founder of Flywheel Digital and executive vice president of Compass Marking. He is a former state budget secretary and chief of staff to then-Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.
Keary M. Nance an administrative officer with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He has nearly 20 years of experience in healthcare administration in the US Air Force, the private sector (Inova Health System and Medstar Washington Hospital Center), and the federal government.
Edward P. Nevin is the managing partner at Deloitte LLP. He has over 33 years of experience as a business executive with tax planning, economic performance studies, asset life projects, regulatory agency negotiations, and finance. He currently serves on the board, as well as on audit and governance committees of Messiah College, United Way of Central Maryland, Carroll County, and the National Aquarium Foundation.
Affiliate-Nominated Seats:
Brianna D. Bowling was nominated by University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center to serve as its representative on the UMMS Board. She is the founder of Zekiah Technologies. Bowling serves as a member of the Finance Committee for Charles Regional Medical Center, as well as the Nominating Committee at Goucher College and Advisory Board for the College of Southern Maryland.
R. Alan Butler was nominated by the University of Maryland Medical Center to serve as its representative on the UMMS Board. Butler is the CEO of Erickson Living, a national building and operating company for continuing care retirement communities. He previously worked as the treasurer for the recruitment company Allegis Group, Inc.
James M. Harkins was nominated by University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health to serve as its representative on the UMMS Board. Harkins is a board member of the Upper Chesapeake Health. He is a former Harford County Executive and Maryland legislator. He also served as the former director of Maryland Environmental Service for three governors.
R. Kent Schwab was nominated by the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center to serve as its representative on the UMMS Board. Schwab is chair of the Baltimore Washington Medical Center Board. A longtime philanthropist in the region, Schwab has been an insurance professional for nearly four decades and owns a successful insurance company serving the Mid-Atlantic region.
The Honorable Alexander Williams, Jr. was nominated by University of Maryland Capital Region Health to serve as its representative on the UMMS Board. Judge Williams is Interim Vice Chair of the UMMS Board. He is board chair of Capital Region Health. He is a retired judge and practices with the law firm Silverman Thompson Slutkin & White. He currently chairs the Appellate Courts Judicial Nominating Commission. He previously served on the Commision to Restore Trust in Policing and the Maryland Redistricting Reform Commission.
