At approximately 12:40 Saturday afternoon, firefighters responded to a single family home on Route 28 for the report of a fire. Firefighters from Short Gap, Fort Ashby, Wiley Ford, Ridgeley and Patterson Creek responded to the scene. Volunteers found fire in the kitchen area of the single-story residence. The blaze claimed the life of a Short Gap elderly woman. The victim’s body was found on the kitchen floor, according to Short Gap Assistant Chief Steve Baker.
