UPDATE: Man Killed In Helen Street Fire

A team of investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, C3I and the Cumberland Fire Department Fire Marshals Office are working to determine the origin and cause of a fire that claimed the life of Stanley Alan Brown (52) in his home at 305 Helen Street in Cumberland. Neighbors contacted 911 and reported smoke in the area at 5:30 a.m. this morning.

The first arriving fire service unit observed smoke coming from the eaves of 305 Helen Street and upgraded the assignment for a working house fire. The unconscious victim was quickly located inside the front door of his single family dwelling and CPR was initiated. He was transported to Western Maryland Health System where he was pronounced deceased from his injuries.

Nearly 45 firefighters responded to the two alarm fire from: Maryland fire departments in Cumberland, Bowling Green, Bedford Road, LaVale, and Crespatown, and West Virginia fire departments in Ridgeley and Wiley Ford. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes and contained to the first floor. Damage to the structure and contents was limited to an estimated $70,000. No evidence of working smoke alarms was located during the on-scene investigation.
