I-70 Crash

July 8th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Maryland State Troopers are investigating a personal injury traffic crash that occurred Monday morning on I-70 near the Washington-Frederick County line.

The crash occurred at about 8:35 AM on eastbound I-70 near the 37 mile marker in Washington County, just west of the Frederick County line on South Mountain.  Troopers from the MSP Hagerstown Barrack, along with fire and EMS units from both Washington and Frederick Counties responded to the three vehicle collision.

Investigation revealed that a tractor-trailer hauling an oversized load driven by Lynn Gardner Dennis, 60 yoa , became disabled and had stopped on the right shoulder.  A 1998 Mitsubishi dump truck driven by, John Enciu, 63 yoa, was traveling in lane 3 and attempted to pass the tractor trailer, however it subsequently struck the left side of the oversized load which was sticking slightly out into the travel portion.  This caused the dump truck to overturn and slide forward into a third vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, which had been parked on the shoulder in front of the disabled tractor-trailer.  The Chevrolet Tahoe was occupied by Nevin Lowdermilk , 69 yoa.

The Mitsubishi dump truck also had two passengers,  Ilie Enciu, 50 yoa and Ioan Buhlea, 60 yoa.  John and Ilie Enciu along with Nevin Lowdermilk were transported via ambulance to Meritus Medical Center.  Ioan Buhlea was flown by Maryland State Police Helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, Maryland.

The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.

Eastbound I-70 was completely closed for approximately 45 minutes and then one lane was open while the crash was investigated.  The road was completely open as of 1130 am.   State Highway Administration personnel assisted with road closure and traffic direction.
