Job Fair Slated To Help Unemployed, and Those Soon To Be Let Go By Verso

May 6th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Today, officials from the states of Maryland and West Virginia, and from Allegany, Garrett and Mineral Counties announced an upcoming job fair for those seeking employment, and to further provide opportunities for individuals impacted by Verso Corporation’s recent decision to close the Luke, Maryland mill.

The job fair will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Bruce Outreach Center located at 398 Philos Avenue, Westernport, MD 21562. The fair will begin at 11:00 AM and will continue to 7:00 PM to accommodate multiple shifts of employees. The job fair is open to all individuals impacted by the mill’s closure and to individuals who are looking for employment opportunities from many of the area’s top employers.

Many employers attending the event have also identified immediate openings for Verso employees. Additionally, resume experts will be on hand to help these workers who need assistance in crafting their resumes. Community organizations and institutions of higher learning and benefit services will also be on hand to provide information regarding insurance, unemployment, investment, social services, and training opportunities.

Anyone affected by the Luke Mill closure, including those truck drivers, loggers, and other service providers that would also need assistance should register at workforceallegany.com. It is critical for all individuals, whether the person was employed directly by the Verso Corporation or through any other entity doing business at the Luke Mill, register to ensure that appropriate federal funds are allocated to meet area needs. The website will be updated in real time as additional resources, events, and postings are added.

It should be called a job carnival as opposed to a job fair. Trying to fill 675 pounds of employee into a 1 pound community.
It will be interesting to know how many job seekers actually find “suitable” employment as a result. What? You say any job is better than not working. How is flipping burgers going to pay the existing mortgage, provide family health insurance and feed a family? All of this and no one wants to see the minimum wage increase because this area can’t afford it.

    You’re right! Suitable!

I also failed to mention how many medical worker’s jobs were lost or their hours cut when the 2 hospitals merged.
