Judge grants Sen. Oaks separate trials on fraud, obstruction allegations

January 19th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

A federal judge ruled Friday in favor of giving state Sen. Nathaniel Oaks two separate trials on fraud and obstruction of justice charges stemming from a corruption investigation. Oaks, a Baltimore Democrat, is accused of taking payments from an FBI source posing as a Texas businessman in exchange for helping him with a construction project. Then when agents confronted Oaks, prosecutors say he confessed and agreed to help investigate another man, only to sabotage the investigation. Initially Oaks was charged with fraud over the alleged payments, but prosecutors later filed the obstruction charge.
