Juveniles Charged In Laundromat Fire

Deputy State Marshals charged two juvenile siblings, an eight year-old female and nine year-old male with igniting the fire causing an estimated $15,000 loss to the structure, contents and loss of revenue of The Corner Laundromat located at 180 N. Mechanic Street in Cumberland..The incident originally occurred on November 16, 2015 at 8:56 a.m. Firefighters responded from the Cumberland Fire Department and quickly extinguished the one alarm fire within five minutes after arrival. Investigators determined the fire originated inside a plastic wastebasket directly beneath a coin operated vending machine. The fire damage was contained to the wastebasket and the vending machine with moderate smoke damage throughout the one story commercial building. Investigators obtained the video surveillance revealing the unattended juveniles igniting paper with a lighter and placing it in the wastebasket before running out of the structure. Both juveniles have been charged with 2nd Degree Arson, 1st Degree Malicious Burning and Burning of a Trash Container. They were released to the custody of their father pending actions by the Allegany County Department of Juvenile Services.
