Kelly Updates Downtown Mall Construction Plan

May 11th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

With construction tentatively slated to begin next spring or summer – planning continues for the re-development of the downtown mall from pedestrian to vehicular. The proposed project includes replacing aging underground utility lines and adding broadband fiber optics. Estimated now at more than $7.4 million, if the project comes to fruition, it will mark the return of traffic to Baltimore Street for the first time since the mall was bricked-over in 1977. The chosen design features 21 staggered parallel parking spaces along a one-way street running west to east from Mechanic Street to George Street.  Paul Kelly, executive director of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, says only about $3 million of the total price tag has been secured  to date, but he is confident the state will step forward to help close the funding gap…
