Kindergarten Report Cards Delayed

October 24th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County Public Schools’ kindergarten report cards will be on a delayed distribution schedule for the first nine week period of the 2011-2012 school year.  The current timeline that Maryland has established for data collection does not align with report card distribution; therefore, kindergarten report cards will now be distributed on Monday, November 21, 2011.

The Maryland State Department of Education monitors the progress of kindergartners throughout the state by using a common measure called the Maryland Model for School Readiness (MMSR) which rates kindergartners in seven areas of development using an assessment system for young children.  The MMSR is a framework for teachers to help them instruct and assess young children in the skills they need to be ready for school.

Maryland establishes a timeline for the state to collect data on kindergarten students.  This year the dates are November 1-16, 2011.  Allegany County Public Schools align the kindergarten report card to the MMSR indicators.  In order to make the data collection window and report card distribution align, kindergarten report card distribution will be delayed in Allegany County Public Schools.

According to Dee Blank, Supervisor of Elementary Education, “Kindergarten students in our school system have shown great gains in school readiness according to the 2010-2011 Maryland School Readiness Report – Children Entering School Ready to Learn.”  For more information about MMSR visit www.mdk12.org/instruction/ensure/MMSR/MMSRFA1.html.
