KKK Plans to Return to Cumberland

May 16th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

That was the reaction April 26th in Cumberland when a crowd of more than 200 was on hand to protest a public rally of the Ku Klux Klan in front of the Allegany County Courthouse on Washington Street. Despite little advanced notice of the event, word spread quickly through the community and protesters made it clear within just a few minutes on that Saturday afternoon that that the presence of the KKK Traditional Rebel Knights was not welcome.  Apparently the message was not received as the Klan is now planning to make Cumberland a regular stop and the rally an annual event. A recap of the Cumbeland rally on the organization’s website did mention that there was a crowd of over 200 in attendance, but did not indicate that the overwhelming majority of those on hand were there in protest. On the website,  Imperial Wizard Matthew Daud stated that plans are already in the works for a return to Cumberland- based on the “show of support”.  He states that next year's rally will be bigger and better since private land in the area has been secured, and the plans include holding a triple cross lighting and barbeque after the public rally in town. Although many in the crowd protesting last month were clearly angry with the KKK coming to Cumberland, police reported there were no incidents and no arrests resulting.
