Labor Secretary: Unemployment Site’s Performance Improving

May 5th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Maryland's new unemployment website is far more reliable than it was just days ago, labor secretary said Tuesday.

Last week, Gov. Larry Hogan directed the labor department to shore up performance of the BEACON One-Stop unemployment insurance website. The website was uniquely slammed because it allowed filings by independent contractors and others not typically eligible for unemployment until the federal CARES Act funded benefits for them.

Tens of thousands of Marylanders have filed for unemployment in the weeks since businesses began closing as a result of Hogan's orders aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.
