Local Attorney Raises Concerns on City’s New Criteria for Parade Fee Structure

November 21st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

With the Cumberland Mayor and City Council is the process of formulating an ordinance that would set criteria and a fee structure for groups wanting to hold special events or parades- one local attorney thinks if such an plan is approved- the city could be asking for legal trouble down the road. The city council discussed the proposal at length at a public work session this week- ultimately deciding to table the measure until it can be modified. On WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” Wednesday, attorney George “Mac” McKinley said he believes setting up a system that would waive the fee for some groups while outright rejecting other groups could be setting the stage for a freedom of speech challenge…

I still stand by my idea that the extra fee monies be placed in escrow anticipating possible expense to the City.
How can someone collect monies for expenses that might not happen? Fire, Police and Maintenance personnel may or may not be needed. The extra fee then may or may not be needed.
Otherwise just raise the permit fee.

The new mayor is simply trying to shut down the city, one parade and one event at a time. This is a systematic effort to close things down. These fees will cause the end of the last annual parade in Cumberland. Since when did the city change attitudes about supporting these events? Didnt former administrations do the opposite and actually donate money to these events? This is sad news from this elected cohort.

      > It’s not too difficult to lure another fast food chain or dollar store. The franchise owner will make a nice profit and with so many people here needing jobs it would be easy to have them filled. Those hourly workers will make minimum wage for approx. 30 hours per week without health benefits and the City fathers and CEDC will brag about creating another 12 or 16 jobs.
Yes, thanks to them we are adding citizens to the employment rolls. Those same workers will have to apply for a State sponsored health card and they will receive it as the State recognizes that the pay they work for is not adequate to cover health care for their family.

The simple answer Bill is that we need tourists to come here and spend their money here to help us local citizens who no longer have quality places to work. It also provides for our of downers to bring their drugs and drug money here so we can append them and confiscate it for our coffers. If we are lucky not only do they get prison terms, but hopefully they will be fined to add more capital to our coffers to help pay for road repair, bridge repair when trains passing through damage them. I hope I explained it clearly for you to now understand how things are done in the Queen City.

Mac you are right too for the few jobs that Dollar General brings. What’s happening to the America that we use to be. We were all for 40 hour weeks with Medical Insurance, unemployment insurance, and pension plan?
